Case Study: MOD Penally

Winter clearance at MoD Penally training camp

The MOD’s Penally camp, which closed in 2022 after serving for more than 160 years as a military training facility, has been cleared by reuse and recycling specialists, Ramco, in readiness for sale.

A range of assets, including gym equipment, catering appliances, furniture, as well as general waste, needed to be removed from the 5.8-hectare facility (that’s more than 8 football pitches!), which contains around 50 huts and other buildings.

A chilly week at Penally!

Over a week on-site in the middle of winter, with no utilities or power, Ramco’s team of specialists cleared the vast area.

Any reusable equipment was transported to Ramco’s facility in Skegness. After cataloguing and photography, the items were listed in Ramco’s online auction and sold to buyers who could give them a second life.

A thorough camp clear-out!

Eighteen skips worth of waste materials, including 16,000 pieces of furniture, were processed and sorted into metal, wood, and general waste. Ramco coordinated regular and prompt collections of skips, which were reprocessed at a nearby recycling facility.

With the camp quickly and thoroughly cleared, the site was put up for sale. As well as the environmental benefits of reuse and recycling, the sale of assets generated a financial return for the MOD which can now be reinvested.

"The whole process was well-managed by Ramco, efficient and without issue. All works were completed in 7 days and the site was left clean and in good condition. It was an entirely satisfying experience all round and a pleasure working with all those involved."
