Case Study: NRS and Ramco

Where it all began...

Ramco’s work with NRS began in 2018 at their Bradwell site on the Essex coastline, where a large volume of redundant equipment needed to be efficiently and responsibly removed to help clear the site.

NRS appointed Ramco to manage the process, starting with the removal and resale of a range of equipment including a backhoe loader and road sweeper - before returning to clear a further 2,700m3 of assorted equipment (filling 61 lorry loads!). Ramco’s careful, hassle-free approach helped NRS Bradwell become the first nuclear power station in the country to enter the care and maintenance phase in August 2019 - a major milestone for UK nuclear decommissioning.

This success marked the start of an eight-year partnership that’s grown to cover the length and breadth of the UK (from Dounreay to Dungeness!). Not only has it helped NRS unlock the value in surplus equipment - and diverted it from waste streams or landfill - from across 12 sites, it's set the UK standard for sustainable and compliant nuclear decommissioning that’s both good for business and good for the planet.

Just a few of the items rehomed for NRS:

  • A reactor control panel

  • A BROKK demolition machine

  • Over 120 tonnes of scaffolding equipment

  • Generators, compressors and industrial machinery

  • Cabins and IT equipment

  • Vehicles, plant and machinery

No matter how unusual or specialist the asset, Ramco's knowledge of the market, flexible approach, and extensive network of global buyers ensures the right buyer is found and each item is given a new lease of life.

We’ve rehomed NRS assets to over 600

different customers across 8 countries!

Going the extra mile

Ramco's approach for NRS goes beyond collection and resale. If there’s an opportunity to extend the life of an asset and help increase the financial return to NRS, Ramco invest the time and money to enhance an asset's value before it goes to market. Here’s one example (of many!) of a Land Rover Defender collected from one of the NRS sites. Initially valued at £4,000, it was worth a lot more after Ramco...

  • Repaired all minor dents and scratches

  • Undertook a service and provided an MoT

  • Gave it a full valet and polished the alloys

  • Produced a video and imagery for online sale

Our impact

Since Ramco first began working with NRS in 2018, the partnership has delivered measurable, meaningful results - both environmentally and financially. Over eight years of collaboration, spanning multiple sites and a diverse range of surplus assets, the impact of working together has been significant.

Every asset Ramco’s handled for NRS could have otherwise been scrapped, sent to landfill, or simply left to gather dust in storage (and more importantly, lose value!). Instead, through Ramco's proactive asset disposal approach, good equipment is being rehomed everywhere - helping NRS contribute to the circular economy, improve its sustainability performance, and benefit financially.

As NRS continues its programme of nuclear decommissioning across the UK, Ramco remains a committed and valued partner. With more sites, more assets and more opportunities ahead, Ramco is looking forward to continuing to grow its relationship with NRS and raising the bar for sustainable asset disposal.

“At NRS, we are committed to doing everything we can to protect people and the environment. Our partnership with Ramco helps us do just that. All sorts of assets that would have otherwise been scrapped are finding new homes and the financial returns have been a real bonus. Knowing that so many items have been kept in use rather than going to waste is incredibly rewarding, and our work with Ramco continues to deliver on every level."
