Centrica Plc, a multinational energy and services provider that owns British Gas, has ramped up sustainability plans after partnering with waste-prevention and reuse specialist Ramco UK.
Working in collaboration with BaxterStorey, the UK’s largest independent contract caterer who provide catering services for Centrica’s UK sites, Ramco has facilitated the reuse of an extensive range of unwanted equipment including combi ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers, and range cookers. Starting initially with its British Gas facility in Staines in 2020, Centrica and Ramco’s partnership has since accelerated.
Following the successful disposal of catering equipment from Staines, the partnership has now expanded to cover additional assets including plant & machinery, fitness equipment and office furniture from the Staines site and four additional locations in Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff and Leicester.
The equipment was sold through Ramco’s online auctions to customers and businesses who can ensure that each item is given a new lease of life. On-site auctions from Centrica’s facilities were utilised where possible to reduce environmental impact, with Ramco also arranging sales for category specific assets, including catering equipment from their specialist facility in Skegness.
Combined with the environmental benefits relating to reuse, Ramco’s sustainable disposal service has also enabled Centrica and BaxterStorey to reduce disposal costs whilst generating a financial return from the sale of equipment that can be reinvested within the organisations.
Penny Rendall, Property Manager for Centrica, said: “At Centrica we are committed to doing everything that we can to reduce our impact on the environment and ensure that the business is operating sustainably.
“Our relationship with Ramco has enabled us to implement an environmentally friendly disposal solution that gives our unwanted equipment a new lease of life, helping us to reduce waste and contributing towards creating a circular economy.”
Mike Hanson, Director of Sustainable Business at WSH, the parent company of BaxterStorey, said: “Working with Ramco has been fantastic for us as we try to achieve a more circular economy by providing a second life for equipment we no longer require.
“We are pleased to be collaborating with Ramco and look forward to seeing their support expanded across the wider group in the future.”
Ramco’s Business Development Manager, Paul Fieldhouse, commented: “We’re delighted to be working with Centrica and BaxterStorey to support their ambitions towards sustainability and reuse.
“Over the last 18 months, our sustainable disposal approach has helped to give hundreds of surplus assets a new lease of life, reducing waste and disposal costs and generating valuable funds which can be reinvested.
“We’re committed to helping organisations reduce their carbon footprint and achieve their sustainability plans as the UK strives to achieve net-zero by 2050.”
