Public Sector Asset Disposal: How to Choose a Trusted Supplier

Surplus assets are a headache most public sector organisations know all too well. Retired equipment lying about that has been replaced but not yet disposed of. Fleet vehicles that are no longer needed but are still in working order. Usable medical and lab equipment quietly gathering dust in a storage room. Surplus assets often just get forgotten about and spend their days taking up valuable space.

But for many organisations in the Public Sector, asset disposal isn’t just about clearing space. It’s also about meeting environmental obligations, maintaining an auditable disposal trail, achieving the best return for sold equipment, and ensuring the entire process holds up to scrutiny. This usually results in a lot of stress for the individuals that end up having to sort it all out.

Many organisations instead turn to a trusted asset disposal supplier. But with a crowded market full of asset disposal operators, how do you identify a supplier that genuinely understands the public sector?

At Ramco, we've been answering that question for 30 years.

Compliant asset disposal

When it comes to disposing of surplus assets, it is essential that it is done in a fully compliant manner with regular reporting and an auditable paper trail. More so with Public Sector organisations, who are under immense scrutiny to ensure that all asset disposal tasks are above board and carried out through the correct channels.

Compliance runs deeper than checklists and certifications, and that’s why organisations need to choose a supplier that fully understands the requirements of the Public Sector. Ramco started in 1996, winning a contract to assist the Ministry of Defence with the disposal of Commercial Assets. Over the 30 years since then, Ramco has not only retained that contract (which now includes military clothing and textiles) but also won two additional MoD contracts in that time: the Scrap and Hazardous Waste contracts.

The Ministry of Defence demands a fully compliant and auditable disposal route, and that’s the standard that Ramco brings to every asset disposal task. When you've held the Ministry of Defence's commercial asset disposal contract since 1996, accountability isn't optional.

Proven Public Sector experience

There's a huge difference between a supplier who’s worked with the Public Sector and one who has built their business around the unique demands of government organisations. Ramco has spent the last 30 years working closely with all corners of the Public Sector: The MoD, emergency services, the NHS, local authorities and education. Each has their own set of requirements, and Ramco ensures their needs are met in a manner that is not only compliant but also provides the client with the best possible outcome.

West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is one of many organisations that have benefited from Ramco’s approach. The trust was keen for their surplus furniture to stay in circulation rather than be recycled, and so Ramco tapped into their relationship with Reuse Network who proceeded to find charities the furniture could be donated to. This solution was hassle-free for the Trust and ensured the surplus furniture was cleared from their premises and remained in use.

Our Public Sector client list speaks for itself: the Ministry of Defence, National Highways, the BBC, the Met Office, and Ofcom are just a few of the public sector organisations that have trusted Ramco to manage their surplus assets responsibly and compliantly.

A trusted Crown Commercial Service (CCS) supplier

For many Public Sector organisations, asset disposal becomes a headache when it is tied to complicated or lengthy procurement routes, taking up much needed time, whilst surplus assets lose value and occupy valuable space. The Crown Commercial Service’s (CCS) Courier, Distribution, Storage and Specialist Solutions (RM6354) framework provides Public Sector organisations with a fully compliant, auditable procurement route with no need for a standalone tender process. The framework runs from 2026 to 2030, with Ramco as a named supplier allowing public sector organisations to engage us directly through CCS.

Ramco is approved on the following three lots:

  • 4a Managed Service for the Transportation and Disposal of Firearms, Weapons and Explosives (Class 1)
  • 4b Managed Service for Recycling and Disposal
  • 4c Managed Service for Asset Recovery

For any public sector organisation looking for a trusted partner to help with their asset disposal requirements, the CCS framework is the simplest route, and Ramco is ready to be called immediately.

A sustainable approach to asset disposal

Sustainability is no longer optional for public sector organisations. Social value requirements, carbon reduction plans, and net zero commitments now mean that how assets are disposed of is just as important as what financial return is generated.

Reuse is at the heart of how Ramco operates. In 2025 alone, we sold over 1.1 million items on behalf of our clients, keeping surplus equipment in use and extending the life of assets. And whilst we always aim to keep assets in use where we can, we also have relationships with trusted and compliant recycling partners, who ensure that anything that can’t be reused remains within the circular economy through responsible recycling. This approach eliminates the need for our Public Sector clients to use multiple suppliers for different requirements.

Asset disposal made easy

Public Sector procurement teams are stretched already, and the last thing they need is a disposal supplier that creates more work. That’s why Ramco handles the entire process from start to finish. From removal and collection to storage, marketing and sales we do all the work, and you get a return. If your organisation has surplus assets to manage, Ramco is available to the Public Sector through the CCS RM6354 framework.
