How to sell used AV equipment: What event and production companies need to know

Written by Ramco | Aug 5, 2026, 12:49:57 PM

The events and audio visual industry moves fast. Technology evolves constantly, hire stock needs refreshing, and equipment that was cutting-edge only a few years ago can quickly become another taking up space. For production companies and hire businesses, that constant cycle of renewal is simply part of the industry. However, finding the time, resources, and the right route to market to sell surplus equipment is often a challenge in itself.

When surplus equipment is left sitting in storage to gather dust, it can quickly begin to create problems. It occupies valuable warehouse space, ties up capital that could be invested elsewhere, and gradually loses value the longer it remains unused. Fortunately, there is a strong and active secondary market for used AV equipment. The key is reaching the right buyers, and that's where experience makes all the difference.

Over the last eight years we've worked with production companies, hire firms and event businesses across the UK, helping them recover value from surplus AV equipment. In 2025 alone, we sold over £1,240,000 worth of AV and events equipment on behalf of our clients. As our reputation and buyer network continue to grow, so does the reach of every auction, helping clients attract more bidders, achieve stronger returns, and sell surplus equipment through a straightforward, fully managed process.

A well-established marketplace for used AV equipment

Ramco runs regular dedicated auctions for events and AV equipment throughout the year, sitting alongside our broader auction programme. Each auction is professionally catalogued, fully photographed, and then marketed to an established network of buyers including trade professionals, production companies, venues, and independent operators across the UK and internationally.

Alongside our general AV auctions, we host dedicated seasonal sales for PRG, one of the world's largest events businesses, and we also run regular auctions for Blue Elephant. These dedicated sales give clients a reliable, hassle-free route for managing stock rotation without it becoming a recurring headache.

The breadth of companies we work with in this sector gives a sense of how established the marketplace has become. Our AV clients include PRG, Sparq, 3D Productions, Blue Elephant, Universal Live, Visions Group, 21CC Group, and CEG.

Can used AV equipment be sold?

The short answer is yes. Used events and AV equipment often retain significant value, even after years of service in live productions and hire fleets. From individual pieces of kit to complete warehouse clearances, Ramco has experience selling equipment across all areas of the sector. Recent auctions have included:

  • Lighting:

From moving heads, spotlights, and uplighters to lighting consoles and control systems, including professional systems such as GrandMA.

  • Audio:

PA systems, amplifiers, mixing consoles, speakers, subwoofers, microphones, and signal processing equipment from professional production environments.

  • Rigging and staging:

Aluminium truss, rigging hardware, hoists, staging components, and other equipment used to build large-scale event setups.

  • Video and vision:

LED screens, projectors, cameras, video switchers, and broadcast equipment used across live events, conferences, and productions.

  • Power distribution:

Generators, distro boxes, splitters, and power management equipment designed to keep events running safely and efficiently.

  • Cables and connectivity:

Multicore cables, EtherCON, DMX, power cabling, and other essential infrastructure found across production environments.

  • Flight cases and transport:

Custom flight cases, road cases, and equipment protection solutions designed for transporting valuable AV equipment between events.

From individual lots to full warehouse clearances, if it has been used on a show or in a hire fleet, there is likely to be a buyer for it somewhere within Ramco's network. And while AV and production equipment is our speciality in this sector, we regularly help clients manage wider clearances too. Vehicles, backstage equipment, IT assets, and general workshop contents are all areas we have supported events and AV businesses with in the past. Whether you are selling a handful of items or clearing an entire site, Ramco can manage the process from start to finish.

Who buys used AV equipment?

The market for used AV equipment is far broader than many businesses expect. While a lot of buyers are production companies looking to expand their hire fleets, others are venues, theatres, schools, colleges, and independent technicians looking to access professional equipment without paying the cost of buying new. For many organisations, buying used equipment is a practical decision rather than a compromise. A well-maintained lighting console, projector, or speaker system can continue to provide years of reliable service at a fraction of the cost of purchasing new equipment. That strong demand creates real opportunities for businesses looking to recover value from surplus stock.

With an established network of buyers across the UK and internationally, Ramco connects surplus equipment with the businesses that need it most, helping sellers achieve competitive prices while ensuring quality equipment continues to be put to good use.

Three ways to sell your surplus AV equipment

Every business is different. Some clients want to hand over the entire process, while others prefer to keep equipment on site or explore a direct sale for specialist assets. To suit different requirements, Ramco offers three ways to sell surplus AV equipment:

  • Send it to us and we'll do the rest

If you want the full service solution, equipment can be delivered to one of our sites, where we manage the entire process.  From cataloguing and photography through to marketing, handling buyer enquiries, payments, and logistics, everything is handled by our team, allowing you to focus on running your business.

  • On-site auction

For larger consignments or complete warehouse clearances, an on-site auction can be the most practical solution. The equipment remains at your premises while either your team prepares the catalogue with our guidance, or one of our specialists visits your site to catalogue the equipment on your behalf. We market and manage the auction, and successful buyers collect directly from your site, reducing transport costs and minimising disruption.

  • Direct sale to our buyer network

Some higher-value or specialist equipment may be better suited to a direct sale rather than an auction. In these cases, we can approach buyers within our established network to secure the strongest possible outcome for your equipment. This can be an effective option where there is already proven demand for a particular type of equipment.

What our clients say:

PRG

Production Resource Group (PRG) is one of the world's leading event production companies, providing equipment and services for live events ranging from Creamfields and Download Festival to the Olympics, Formula 1, and West End theatre productions including Wicked. Ramco hosts seasonal auctions for PRG's used equipment through PRG Proshop, helping them rotate stock efficiently, free up space, and make high-quality used equipment available to production professionals and venues worldwide.

"By hosting auctions of surplus equipment, PRG can rotate stock effectively and refresh its inventory with the latest technology to support its growing global customer base. Working with Ramco means we're able to quickly clear stock and free up space, all whilst making our quality used equipment available to production professionals and venues worldwide."

Sparq

Sparq is a UK event production company with offices across the country, creating live, virtual, and hybrid experiences for brands and names including ASOS, Ed Sheeran, and Sylvester Stallone. With cutting-edge technology central to what they do, equipment dates quickly. Since early 2022, Ramco has collected and sold everything from production lighting and audio systems to projectors, staging, and cables on Sparq's behalf, generating funds that have been reinvested back into the business. Sparq's charitable arm also donates some surplus production tech to schools and colleges, giving young people hands-on experience in the events sector.

"From the start, it was evident that Ramco's business model aligned with our sustainability plan. Working with them has proved to be a real eye-opener and we've become much more aware of the potential in our unwanted equipment. We've been extremely surprised by the amount of value found in the surplus items held across the Sparq network."

Helen Elam, Head of Operations, Sparq

Giving your AV equipment a second life

Selling surplus AV equipment is about more than simply freeing up warehouse space. Equipment that is no longer needed by one business can still provide years of value elsewhere, and the events industry has a strong culture of reuse. From production companies and venues to freelancers and organisations looking to invest without buying new, there is a constant demand for quality used AV equipment.

For businesses rotating hire stock, upgrading technology, or clearing space, Ramco provides a direct route into this established buyer community. With years of experience in the AV sector, we understand the equipment, the market, and what it takes to achieve the best possible result.

The benefits are both commercial and environmental. Surplus equipment stops taking up valuable space, capital can be recovered and reinvested, and quality kit stays in use rather than being left unused or prematurely scrapped. By helping equipment find its next owner, Ramco makes the sales process simple while supporting a more sustainable approach to asset management.
